The Chouteau family had extensive holdings which included salt works and trading posts. Jean Pierre and his brother, Auguste, from a base in St. Louis, Missouri, traded with Osages in the area. *

From a 1983 Oklahoman news article: "Jean Pierre Chouteau Bridge and Highway, Mayes County, Grand River west of Salina on State Highway 20. Chouteau is claimed to be the founder of the first white settlement in Oklahoma near what is now Salina."
